Davey Crockett was rumored to be among the 185 Rangers, leaders, and parents who descended on beautiful Camp Twin Echo to learn new and unique outdoor skills and to worship God in His creation at the 1999 Southwest Suburban Section Pow-Wow held June 10-13.

The Sentinel was unable to confirm the rumors of the reported sightings of Mr. Crockett. According to Sectional Commander Robert Berdine, the 1999 Pow-Wow set a new sectional attendance record.

The Pow-Wow theme was Frontier Fundamentals. The focus of the weekend was teaching the boys and their commanders outdoor skills that they would not ordinarily see during their weekly meetings. There are certain fundamentals required for outdoor living and these were taught during the pow-wow.

Among the classes taught were:

- Fishing (Ed Farrell)
- Traps and Snares (Kirk Hoak)
- Backpacking (Greg Bahleda)
- Edible plants (Eric Wallussen)
- Primitive Fire Starting (Dave Davenport and Jim Dinicola)
- Dutch Oven Cooking (Ron Hart, Terry Leighty, Mark Filtz)

The Council fires were conducted by Daren Schick, who led the worship, and by Rev. Dave Davenport, who was the speaker. Rev. Davenport also conducted the morning devotions. Through out the weekend, Rev. Davenport used the story of the settlement of the Southwestern Pennsylvania region as a backdrop to the devotions and council fires. His messages were both educational and inspiring.

While many people worked long and hard to make the pow-wow a success; the Sectional Staff would like to extend a special thank you to the following:

- Daren Schick, who is not yet a Royal Ranger, for giving of his time and talent in leading the worship at the Council Fires.

- Rev. Dave Davenport for his inspirational messages and the history lessons at morning devotions and the council fires.

- Bill Kiger for teaching us at Sunday school life’s fundamentals and how to apply them to our daily life. Also, for reminding us that Davey Crockett gave his life defending something he believed in and that we, as Christians, should do no less for our Savior.

The best is yet to come ... Wait until next year!

The Southwest Suburban Section ... Reaching, Teaching, and Keeping for Christ!
